Northeast Regional Medical Center is Vital to Northeast Missouri

Delivers essential medical services and broad impact to the larger community
KIRKSVILLE, Mo., April 3, 2024– Over the course of 2023, Northeast Regional Medical Center played a vital role helping people get well and live healthier at more than 84 thousand patient encounters across its hospital and network of affiliated clinics and other outpatient sites of care.
At more than 12,100 emergency department visits each year, lifesaving medically necessary care is provided for all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Members of the community who cannot fully afford their medical care are provided deep discounts or even charity care and the hospital has resources to help them secure medications and medical support devices. Last year, Northeast Regional Medical Center provided more than $11.6 million in charity and uncompensated care for the community’s most vulnerable.
“Each and every day, the employees and members of the medical staff at Northeast Regional Medical Center play a vital role in Kirksville and the surrounding communities,” said Patrick Avila, NRMC CEO. “Night and day, weekends, holidays and inclement weather, our team of clinicians and caregivers are here to provide safe, compassionate care to the people who need us.”
Other support for social determinants of health in the community includes financial donations for charitable organizations such as United Way, A.T. Still University Forest Lake Area Trail System, and Northeast Missouri Alliance for Passenger Education and Safety, and acts of service such as the Jars of Love drive collecting over 500 jars of peanut and other nut butters for the Pantry for Adair County.
With a shared commitment for improving rural access to health care, Northeast Regional Medical Center and University of Missouri Health Care (MU Health Care) have formed a strategic relationship designed to increase access to specialty services and enhance health care for people living in northeastern Missouri. The alignment builds upon an existing relationship between the two health systems in which MU Health Care physicians provide tele-neonatology consultations to Northeast Missouri Health Council OB/GYN physicians caring for newborns at Northeast Regional, allowing more families to stay in Kirksville while their babies receive the special support they need before going home.
With the addition of robotic surgery equipment, nuclear medicine equipment upgrades and the addition of 3D mammography, Northeast Regional Medical Center continues to apply its resources to medical services, facilities and technologies that patients want to access close to home.
Civic resources and services are supported by Northeast Regional Medical Center’s tax payments of more than $687 thousand and the payroll of more than $25.6 million ripples across the local economy as employees buy goods and services.
Workforce development remains a priority and the hospital maintains strong relationships with local nursing programs and the A.T. Still University residency program. Investments are being made to help team members achieve their personal and professional goals through assistance with student loan repayments, as well as tuition reimbursement.
